Phase 2 is the "basic" instructor training and is in most cases the level where candidates start their VIP Instructor Program. Phase 2 is a very intensive full month training program with only very limited time off.
You start with a combination of the Rescue Diver, Emergency First Response and Oxygen First Aid courses. This will take 4 days. The next day we start immediately with the 9 day Divemaster program. When these programs are completed, we have two remedial days to do remakes on tests and exams if needed. Candidates who were successful on all parts of the course can take off on these days.
The second half of Phase 2 is your Instructor Course (IDC). The first 5 days are the Assistant Instructor program. In this part you learn the basics of teaching in the classroom, pool and open water. After the explanations of the staff you are teaching (short) presentations, which are evaluated by the staff and you receive counseling on aspects that should be improved. Day 6 is a remedial day (successful candidates can take the day off).
We then progress to the 5 day Open Water Scuba Instructor Course . This program introduces you to the varying courses a PADI OWSI is allowed to teach and we improve your teaching skills by assigning you parts of these courses to present , which again will be evaluated and counseled. After the OWSI program there are 2 days left before the Instructor Exam. During these days we will remediate any problems you may have and at the same time do your Emergency First Response Instructor Course and Oxygen First Aid Instructor Course with you.
Phase 2 finishes with the Instructor Examination. The exam takes 2 days and is done by a representative from PADI Europe - an Instructor Examiner. The exam involves all the aspects of what you have learned in Phase 1 and Phase 2 - there are no surprises, but an acceptable level of knowledge and skills is expected. VIP Instructor candidates have the option to take the exam at this point or to do the exam during their training in Phase 3. If you feel ready for the exam - just do it - if you are in doubt and would like to study and practice a bit more, then just wait for the next exam, which is normally 4 weeks later (in phase 3 you have the weekends off and the Instructor Examinations are always on a weekend). It is not required to pass the exam before entering in Phase 3.
If you are already a certified Rescue Diver (and have at least 60 logged dives) you do not have to participate in the first 4 days of the course. If you are already a PADI Divemaster, you only have to do the second half of Phase 2.
Diving Instructors from another organization than PADI only have to do the last 10 days of Phase 2 and PADI Instructors do not have to do Phase 2 at all - they can immediately start in Phase 3 (if they are not yet EFR and Oxygen First Aid Instructors, they should do the last two course days from Phase 2).
If you are not sure if your certifications would be accepted as an equivalent, you can contact us under vip@instructor-training.com.
